At the Woman’s Exchange of Memphis, supporting the local community and offering opportunities to women is integral to what we do.
While our customers recognize us most for the handmade clothing and gifts we sell, we are only able to offer these collections by providing women with the opportunity to sell their goods through consignment as a non-profit organization. Our shop is also blessed with the support of nearly 350 volunteer staff members, who give their time to run our shop and reach out to local artisans. Still, there are overhead expenses needed to keep the shop operational, which is where the generous donations of community members come in. If you are seeking a way to give back to the community, donating to the Woman’s Exchange is the perfect way to contribute. Read on for a closer look at why your donations are so important to our organization.
The Woman’s Exchange Roots
The Woman’s Exchange has roots in Philadelphia, where a movement was started in 1832 to help women gain financial security by selling crafts through consignment in a retail environment. In 1885, the Woman’s Exchange of Memphis was founded with the same goal, and it has been continuously operational since 1933. Through decades of service in the community, we have been selling the work of local consigners while employing highly talented seamstresses, who create our signature infants’ and children’s clothing. While the work of our consigners and seamstresses speaks for itself in quality and design, we would not have the resources to support these artisans without donations from the community.
Reasons to Support the Woman’s Exchange
When you donate to the Woman’s Exchange, your money may support women in a number of different ways. Along with providing our shop with the resources needed to keep our doors open, your donation might:
- Support handmade craftsmanship
- Support the local arts
- Supply artisans with goods and materials to continue their crafts
- Provide resources to teach craft skills to future generation
- Ensure a future for our artisans
